Many interesting and informative scientific presentations were provided at the PICES FUTURE (Forecasting and Understanding Trends, Uncertainty and Responses of North Pacific Marine Ecosystems) Open Science Meeting (OSM) on the Kohala Coast of Hawaii. The PICES Secretariat has arranged a special issue of Progress in Oceanography for publishing manuscripts resulting from the presentations and discussions at the OSM. he guest editors for this issue are: Hal Batchelder, Anne Hollowed, Chan Joo Jang, Hiroaki Saito, and Tom Therriault. Hal Batchelder (hbatch@pices.int) will serve as the corresponding editor for paper submissions.

The editors propose that FUTURE relevant manuscripts be submitted by 1 November 2014 to the corresponding editor (hbatch@pices.int), who will coordinate with the other editors to arrange peer review, and as needed the revision process. Our goal is to have the special FUTURE issue of Progress in Oceanography published by ca. October 2015.

Many participants at the OSM were struck by how relevant some of the presentations were to the fundamental objectives of FUTURE, and specifically to the aims of the Climate, Ocean Variability and Ecosystems (COVE), Anthropogenic Influences on Coastal Ecosystems (AICE), and Status, Outlooks, Forecasts and Engagement (SOFE) advisory panels that provide guidance to the FUTURE effort.

Authors of manuscripts submitted to this special issue are encouraged to link their results directly and explicitly to specific objectives of the FUTURE Integrative Science Program (see the specific links to FUTURE and the Advisory Panels above). After the papers that are recommended for publication in the special issue are known, the editors will jointly prepare a preface to the issue that integrates the diverse new FUTURE relevant results into a coherent whole.
